"Deeply saddened to hear that my long time dear friend @SitaramYechury is no longer with us. An efficient statesman, a wonderful human being and a truly understanding friend. I will miss him dearly," Mammootty wrote on his handles on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) along with an image of the late communist leader.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the passing of Yechury was an irreparable loss for the nation, especially during its time of crisis.
"The demise of CPIM General Secretary Comrade Sitaram Yechury has caused a heavy loss not only to the communist movement but also to the secular democratic movements in India.
"The demise of Yechury is an irreparable loss for the CPI(M). Joining the pain of his family and the countless hearts that loved him. Tributes are paid to the vivid memories of comrade," the Kerala Chief Minister wrote.
Sitaram Yechury breathed his last at Delhi-AIIMS after a prolonged illness. The three-time party chief took over from Prakash Karath as the general secretary of the CPI(M) when the Left was on the decline in the country. Mentored by Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Yechury thrived on the challenges of coalition politics and witnessed the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front registering historic back-to-back victories in Kerala despite the party losing ground in Tripura and West Bengal.
