Actor and former general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), Edavela Babu, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a rape case.
The Special Investigation Team arrested Babu after a three-hour-long interrogation at the coastal police headquarters in Kochi.

However, Babu would be released on bail as he has already obtained anticipatory bail from the Ernakulam Sessions court. His medical examination will be conducted at Ernakulam General Hospital.
Babu has been booked under IPC sections 354 (sexual assault), 376 (rape) and 509 (acts, words, or gestures that intend to insult a woman's modesty) over a complaint filed by a Kochi-based actress, who said the incident occurred at his flat in Kaloor, where she had gone to fill out a form for AMMA membership.

The actress had also filed similar complaints against other actors such as Mukesh, Jayasurya and Maniyanpilla Raju, among others.
Babu's arrest comes a day after the SIT led by Ernakulam SP G. Poonkuzhali IPS arrested Kollam MLA and actor Mukesh after questioning him at the coastal police headquarters. Mukesh was released on bail.
The allegations against Babu and other prominent personalities in the Malayalam film industry came shortly after the release of the Hema Committee report.
