What is Hashimoto's Disease? Arjun Kapoor says autoimmune disorder may have caused weight gain

Arjun Kapoor has revealed that he is suffering from Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder, since 30 and explained that it is an extension of having a thyroid issue.

Saying his health has always been something he never openly spoken about, the actor told Hollywood Reporter India, "I went through my own physical issues - I am a fat kid at heart, right? It creates a lot of mental trauma for years which you don't realise - your equation with food, your equation with taking care of yourself."

Explaining the Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, he said it is almost like taking a flight can cause weight gain as the body goes into stress. The genetic condition, which he shared with his late mother and sister, apparently took a toll on his body and self-image.

Recallings moment of self-doubt, Kapoor said, "You fight against it, you look for validation. I was diagnosed with mild depression."

What is Hashimoto's disease?

Hashimoto's disease, which is also called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland and its hormone production, according to Mayo Clinic.

The disease can result in fatigue, weight gain and constipation. It mostly affects middle-aged women but can also affect men and other age groups.
