Actor Dhanush has moved Madras High Court to file a lawsuit against Nayanthara and Vignesh Sivan for alleged copyright infringement.
The case pertains to use of visuals from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the actress's Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale. The 2015 movie, starring Nayanthara in the lead, was produced by Dhanush's production house Wunderbar Films.
Wunderbar Films sought the bench's approval to prosecute Netflix liked company Los Gatos Production Services India LLP within the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court. Netflix reports its content investments in India through Mumbai-based Los Gatos.
The bench, presided over by Justice Abdul Quddhose, allowed Wunderbar's request, pointing out that other parties Nayanthara, Sivan and their Rowdy Pictures Pvt Ltd are located under the high court's jurisdiction.
This comes more a week after Nayanthara posted an open letter, accusing Dhanush of harbouring vengeance against her. Dhanush reportedly sought damages worth Rs 10 crore ahead of the release of the Netflix documentary for a three-second behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.
Nayanthara said Naanum Rowdy Dhaan was significant to her as she fell in love with Vignesh Sivan on the sets of the film, following which they tied the knot in June 2022.
The actress earlier thanked the producers who issued no-objection certificates to use the footage from their films in her Netflix documentary. She named Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan, AR Murugadoss in her statement.
"The most precious thing I've earned in these 20 years of my career is the friendships, love and respect I've got from the ones I've worked with," she wrote.
The Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, was released on November 18. It shows her journey from her hometown in Kerala's Thiruvalla and how she entered the Malayalam film industry and later established her career in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movies.
