'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi's revenge-action drama 'Maharaja' is all set to hit theatres across China on November 29, Friday. The critically acclaimed Tamil flick will release on almost 40,000 screens in China, a first for an Indian film in the country, reports said. Needless to say, it is going to be a record-breaking opening for the Vijay Sethupathi movie in the overseas location.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, 'Maharaja' was released on June 14, 2024. Produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Sudhan, the blood-soaked revenge drama that features Abhirami and Anurag Kashyap in pivotal roles, is available on Netflix for Indian cinephiles.
The movie may gross past Rs 1,000 crore with the significant release, reports said, after it received an unprecedented response from the special premiere. No Kollywood project has so far breached the mark in China, news reports added.
Despite stiff competition from Nag Ashwin's pan-India release 'Kalki 2898 AD', the film managed Rs 71.3 crore net domestically. Reports showed the movie cost the producers Rs 20 crore in all and had grossed over Rs 25 crore at overseas theatres alone. It remains the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 so far after Kamal Haasan’s 'Indian 2.' Promotional activities were in full swing acorss China ahead of its release, reports said quoting distributors Yi Shi Films and Alibaba Pictures.
