Recently, there were reports of Tom Cruise working with director Doug Liman on a NASA movie that would be shot in outer space in association with Space X. Now, it has come to light that the duo is working on one more project, 'Deeper'. Touted as a supernatural thriller, it's currently in the early stage of development. The release plans are as of yet unknown.
Liman confirmed the development in a recent interaction with Showbiz411, mentioning his and Tom Cruise's intention of doing a "scary" thriller.
As per the official synopsis, 'Deeper' follows "an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench."
Before Doug Liman and Tom Cruise revived the project, it was trapped in development hell for almost a decade after, in 2016, MGM acquired a spec script from writer Max Landis after a bidding war. Multiple actors were attached to it at various stages, including Bradley Cooper, Gal Gadot, and Idris Elba, but the project failed to materialise then.
Before reaching Liman, it passed through the hands of directors such as Kornel Mundruczo ("White God") and Baltasar Kormakur ("2 Guns").
Further complications piled on when multiple women alleged that Max Landis abused them mentally and physically, and the above directors went on to pursue other projects. Elba and Kormakur recently collaborated on 'Beast'.
Liman and Cruise previously worked on two successful movies, American Made (based on true events) and Edge of Tomorrow (a sci-fi blockbuster with aliens and time travel). While there is no official information as to when Liman and Cruise will make and release the project, the news of their reunion is nevertheless exciting, given the outstanding quality of their previous endeavors.
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise is putting the final touches on the upcoming Mission Impossible installment, The Final Reckoning, the follow-up to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. It's slated for a May 2025 release.
There are also reports of Cruise being attached to star in a sequel to his 1990 racing hit, 'Days of Thunder', egged on by the success of the 'Top Gun' sequel 'Maverick'.
Meanwhile, the actor's next -- and first -- mystery project with acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu is set to go on floors soon.
