The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two in American Film Institute's Top 10 List

It's that time of the year when top entertainment portals across the world are in the process of preparing their Top 10 lists. One of the most sought-after, the American Film Institute, has unveiled its list of 10 best from films and television from 2024.

The list of films comprises independent favourites such as Sean Baker’s “Anora” and Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist”, and even box-office behemoths like Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two”, along with other popular titles like Edward Berger’s “Conclave” and Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked“. This year's list is also unique in that it makes space for foreign-language films with American backing in some capacity. Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez is one such eligible for entry.

Interestingly, one of the reasons the AFI lists are closely watched is the high likelihood of some of its choices making it to the Oscars competition. Notably, the list is missing Ridley Scott’s "Gladiator II,” Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature “The Room Next Door,” and Steve McQueen’s “Blitz”, signaling their minimal chances of entry in the Oscar race.

From TV, shows like "Abbott Elementary" and "The Bear", which have already established themselves as critical darlings, are on the list.
