British filmmaker Christopher Nolan may only have a few films to his name, but nearly all of them have earned high accolades. Nolan, as a director, is known for blending genres like science-fiction, war, crime, and action with mind-bending twists, ensuring that the audiences are always left guessing.

This year, fans of Nolan celebrate the 10th anniversary of Interstellar, released in 2014. The film garnered widespread acclaim for its unique plot, paired with Hans Zimmer’s goosebump-worthy background score. Additionally, it was applauded by scientists for its accurate depiction of a black hole.

To mark the decade of success, Interstellar was re-released this year, on December 6, on all screens, including IMAX. The re-release has been a massive hit in the U.S., earning USD 4.5 million from just 166 screens in the U.S. and Canada. According to The Associated Press, the 70mm IMAX film presentations alone had an impressive USD 70,000 per theatre average in the U.S.

In an interview with the publication, Nolan said, “I was just so gratified by the response. It’s really thrilling when people respond to your work at any point. But 10 years later, to have new audiences coming and experiencing it in the way that we’d originally intended it on the big IMAX screens and in particular on those IMAX film prints? It’s really rewarding to see that it continues to have a life.”

The Dark Knight trilogy director also observed that the theatres were primarily filled with youngsters who hadn’t seen the film on the big screen and yearned for the experience.

It was a fairly easy task to convince IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond to re-release the film. In fact, it was the most requested film on all their socials. “We saw this coming from the beginning. It reminded us in a small way of the frenzy around Oppenheimer. But the result is far beyond our expectations.”

When will Interstellar re-release in India?

Fans of Nolan in India have been eager to grab tickets to the sci-fi flick, but unfortunately, it is not available for screening in Indian theatres. Not yet, at least.

Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa 2: The Rule and animated film Moana 2 have occupied the IMAX screens in India, making it impossible for Interstellar to squeeze in. Later this month, Mufasa: The Lion King will also be screened on IMAX. But now, it seems that the Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway-starrer will not skip past its Indian fanbase.

“Contrary to what has been reported, the studio, Warner Bros, definitely plans to release Interstellar in India,” a source told the Bollywood Hungama.

“Sadly, it couldn’t be released on December 6 as Pushpa 2 – The Rule was to arrive in the same week and there’s a huge demand to see the sequel in IMAX and normal 2D formats. IMAX is also very clear about not having two big IMAX films in the same week. Besides, Warner Bros is not in favour of having just one show daily for Interstellar; it wants to provide a sufficient number of screenings throughout the day.”

“Warner Bros has decided to re-release Interstellar in the first quarter of 2025. As soon as they come across any vacant week or weeks, they’ll grab the opportunity to re-release Nolan’s much-loved classic on the big screen. A date will be decided soon.”
