Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stated that opportunities will be created for women entering the film industry to showcase their talent with dignity. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) held at the Nishagandhi Auditorium.

"It is heartening to see IFFK evolving into one of the world’s best festivals with strong political content. The issue of films being made to align with corporate interests must be taken seriously," the Chief Minister emphasised.

He further added that the discussions and debates at the festival are progressive in nature. “Beyond all differences of opinion, the festival fosters a sense of unity among the youth. Cinema often reflects the true essence of society. At the previous festival, films expressing solidarity with Palestine were showcased. The situation in that region has worsened now. This time, Armenian films depicting themes of civil war and displacement are being featured. Through the festival, we aim to stand with the oppressed and bring their living conditions to the attention of the world,” he said.

Notably, the latest edition of IFFK places a strong emphasis on female filmmakers. Out of the 177 films to be screened at this year’s International Film Festival of Kerala, 52 are directed by women. Additionally, the festival celebrates and honours three prominent female filmmakers.

Cannes Grand Prix winner Payal Kapadia was honoured with the Spirit of Cinema award, while acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker and actor Ann Hui received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Shabana Azmi, celebrating 50 years in acting, was also honoured at the festival.

Furthermore, the IFFK features a dedicated section titled ‘Female Gaze,’ which prominently showcases films made by women filmmakers. From December 13 to 20, the festival will screen films from 68 countries across 15 theatres in Thiruvananthapuram.

Meanwhile, a man has been taken into custody for howling at the Chief Minister at the IFFK venue. According to the police, he did not have a delegate pass for this year's festival but was found carrying a pass from the 2022 IFFK.
