Malayalam director P Balachandrakumar, who was a key witness in the 2017 actress assault case, has passed away due to illness. He was undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment at a private hospital in Chengannur.

As per reports, Balachandrakumar, 62, had been long suffering from kidney-related ailments for which he was undergoing extensive treatments. During this period, he suffered multiple cardiac arrests, which led to further complications, severely worsening his health. However, he did not let these deter him, and he showed up in court without fail for the trial proceedings concerning the actress assault case. 

Balachandrakumar had directed a Malayalam film called 'Cowboy', starring Asif Ali, Khushbu Sundar, Jagathy Sreekumar, and Bala. He is survived by his wife, Sheeba. In the last week of November, she had sought financial assistance to cover his mounting medical expenses.

Balachandrakumar and Mollywood actress assault case

An erstwhile friend of Dileep, Balachandrakumar's statements pertaining to the actress assault case gained considerable attention when he made multiple revelations on the associations between the accused, informing authorities that Dileep had close ties to first accused Pulsar Suni and that he had in his possession the visuals of Suni assaulting the actress. 

He also testified the former had conspired to threaten and kill the officials probing the case, following which further proceedings were initiated against Dileep and his co-conspirators.
