The third entry in the animated Spider-Verse movie series has found its directors. Sony Pictures has entrusted it with the skillful hands of Bob Persichetti and Justin K Thompson.
Titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the much-anticipated chapter will conclude the trilogy that began with 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won unanimous critical praise and a Best Animated Feature Oscar. A sequel, titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, followed in 2023.
Persichetti and Thompson have been with the franchise since its conception and have been working closely with the team and studio for a while.
Persichetti was part of the first film's directorial trio. He was an executive producer on the second, while Thompson worked as the production designer on the first film and was part of the second film's directorial trio that included Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.
“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting,” said the duo in a statement.
“The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it. We’re bringing everything we’ve got," they added.
A milestone achievement, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse boasted an extraordinary animation style that combined multiple genres and remarkable storytelling quality. It introduced audiences to a teenager, Miles Morales, as a different iteration of Spider-Man, who discovers and gets involved with the events of the multiverse.
The voice cast featured Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber.
The sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, saw Miles working with Gwen Stacy and other Spider-People across dimensions and multiple locations, including India, when a new threat emerged.
Filmmaker duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have significant creative contributions to the series, are returning to co-write the screenplay.
