Jason Momoa, star of Game of Thrones and the Aquaman films, will be returning to DC's superhero universe to play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, if his latest Instagram post is any indication. The news has also been confirmed by Deadline.
Momoa has in the past expressed interest in playing the character given his hobby of collecting and consuming comic books.
In the Instagram post, the actor attached a screenshot of a snippet from an old interview in which he said he is available to play the character if he ever gets the call.
Captioning the post, "They called," his snippet reads: “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” said the actor. Momoa went on to say that should DC come around asking him to play Lobo, it would be “a f*ck yeah.”
The character seems perfect for someone of Momoa's physique and stature. Besides, Lobo's penchant for violence and irreverent attitude — a territory Momoa formerly traversed in multiple properties — coupled with the actor's stint as Aquaman in two movies and in Justice League, his character Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, and his performance in the dystopian Apple TV+ series See make him a natural fit.
An antihero, Lobo is known for his superhuman powers and invincibility, with regenerative abilities similar to Wolverine.
Interestingly, online forums dedicated to superheroes have often witnessed debates on who would emerge the victor if Lobo and Wolverine went toe-to-toe with each other.
First introduced in Omega Men #3 in June 1983, 'Lobo' is a creation of writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen. He is associated with a bounty hunter persona with a taste for chaos and destruction.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has Craig Gillespie attached to direct from a script by Ana Nogueira. Production is expected to begin on January 13. The film is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Aside from Supergirl, Momoa has in his upcoming slate 'A Minecraft Movie', the live-action/animated Animal Friends, Fast X: Part 2, the Apple miniseries Chief of War, and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew.
