Actor Lily-Rose Depp has been getting raves for her performance in Robert Eggers' horror film Nosferatu, the latest remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent classic of the same name.
While doing a promotional interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Depp brought up a heavily scandalous issue that was in the news in 2023, related to her HBO series The Idol, co-starring singer Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd, and co-created by Sam Levinson.
The issue was brought to notice in 2023 by an expose in Rolling Stones magazine, wherein crew members of The Idol alleged that Levinson fostered an unhealthy workspace and his inclination for creating uncomfortably disturbing scenarios of a highly sexual nature in his script.
In her interview, Depp said she was upset by all the people directing vitriol against Levinson when the show was launched.
Calling him a "great friend" and somebody she considers "family", she shared that the "only thing that was upsetting about that whole period was people talking negatively about (Sam) because the things that they said about him, particularly, as a filmmaker, just couldn't be further from the truth than from, at least, my experience working with him. So that sucks. You just never want to hear people talking s**t about your friend."
In The Idol, Depp played a pop star who gets involved in a twisted relationship with a nightclub owner who is also a cult leader. The series was cancelled after the first season.
The 25-year-old actor said the series was a great learning experience for her, adding that the show was intended to push society's buttons. "That was a period in my life where I felt like I learned so much, I was pushed so far out of my comfort zone, in the most beautiful way, and it gave me so much growth that I will always look back on that as one of the most special times of my life. It's beautiful and I wouldn't have changed anything about it."
