There was much anticipation for Payal Kapadia to bring home a Golden Globe for India on Sunday. Her film All We Imagine as Light was nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, but unfortunately, lost out to Emilia Perez (France). Other films competing in the category included The Girl With the Needle (Poland), I'm Still Here (Brazil), The Seed of the Sacred Fig (US) and Vermiglio (Italy).
Kapadia was also nominated for Best Director, marking history as the first Indian to be nominated. However, she was triumphed over by The Brutalist director Brady Corbet. The Mumbai-based director gained recognition when her film All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2024. The film – which chronicles the struggles of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai – has since been generating Oscar buzz. It was expected to be sent as India or France’s official submission to the Academy (being an Indo-French production), but both countries ultimately chose different films – India sending Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies, while France selected Emilia Perez. India lost out on the Oscar run for Best Foreign Film, as Laapataa Ladies failed to enter the nominee's shortlist.
The film also secured three spots on the BAFTA Film Awards longlists: Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
