‘Friends’ star Lisa Kudrow reads Matthew Perry’s note 20 years later

Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay in the NBC American sitcom Friends revealed on the ‘Drew Barrymore Show’ that she recently found a note that the late Matthew Perry — her co-star who played Chandler Bing — had left in the cookie jar, although she doesn’t reveal the contents.

The talk show host asked her if she ever stole anything from the set of Friends. “Yes, but I’m too afraid to tell you what”, she confessed. “Someone will come take it away from me”.

Drew wondered if it was the ‘cookie time jar’, but Lisa clarified that that prop was given to her by Matthew Perry himself when the crowd-puller concluded with the final episode. Then she revealed that she had recently found the note that he had kept inside the jar for her, which she hadn’t opened or read before.

Four years ago, on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, another American talk show, Lisa disclosed the hysterical story behind the famed jar. The prop was from Monica’s (played by Courteney Cox) and Rachel’s (played by Jennifer Aniston) apartment on the set.

During the shooting of a scene, Lisa had to say as Phoebe, “Oo, look at the time, I better get going”. But while the scene was being shot, she realised that she didn’t have a watch on her, so she pointed at this cookie time jar while saying her lines. Matthew brought it up after filming, and they laughed over the humorous improvisation.

In a tragic incident, the beloved actor, best known as ‘Chandler’, was found dead at 54 years old, his body floating face-down in a jacuzzi in his home in Southern California on October 28, 2023. According to the autopsy report, he died from the ‘acute effects of ketamine, and subsequent drowning’. After thorough investigations, five people were charged for supplying him with the ketamine that killed him. They had taken advantage of him being an addict.

His co-stars were devastated by his demise. Lisa Kudrow posted a picture of her with Matthew on Instagram after his passing, with a message for her deceased friend. It said, “Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said, that my muscles ached, and tears poured down my face EVERY DAY.  Thank you for opening your heart in a six-way relationship that required compromise. And a lot of ‘talking’. Thank you for showing up at work when you weren’t well and then, being completely brilliant. Thank you for the best 10 years a person gets to have. Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for all I learned about GRACE and LOVE through knowing you. Thank you for the time I got to have with you, Mathew”.

“He was funny and he was kind”, Courteney Cox (who plays Monica, Chandler’s friend and later his wife) mentions in her post. Friends, the hit comedy series, is about the life of six young friends of the 1990s who live in the same apartment in Manhattan and figure out their crazy lives and love stories together. People loved the show because it was familiar, nostalgic and relatable, and above all, it was about friendship. The actors got back together in 2021 to film the documentary Friends: The Reunion.
