Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran dies at 80

Known for his dulcet voice, Jayachandran has recorded more than 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada

Legendary singer P. Jayachandran, lovingly called 'Bhava Gayakan' for his unparalleled ability to evoke emotions through music, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 80 after a prolonged battle with cancer. A towering figure in Indian playback singing, Jayachandran left behind a legacy of over 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi, cementing his place as a luminary in the South Indian music world.

Born as the third of five children to Rama Varma Kochaniyan Thampuran of the Kochi royal family and Paliath Subhadra Kunjamma, Jayachandran’s musical journey reflected a rare blend of grace and artistic passion. His versatility knew no bounds, effortlessly traversing genres, languages, and styles with a voice that could shift from devotional hymns to romantic ballads with spellbinding ease.

Throughout his illustrious career, P. Jayachandran collaborated with nearly every major composer in the southern film industries, including legends like G. Devarajan, M. S. Baburaj, V. Dakshinamoorthy, K. Raghavan, M. K. Arjunan, M. S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, Shyam, A. R. Rahman, M. M. Keeravani,  Vidyasagar, and M. Jayachandran. 

Jayachandran’s immense contributions to South Indian cinema earned him numerous accolades, most notably the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986. He also won five Kerala State Film Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, cementing his reputation as one of the region’s finest playback singers. In 2020, his unparalleled influence on Malayalam cinema was honored with the prestigious J. C. Daniel Award.

What set Jayachandran apart was his ability to bring life to lyrics, turning every song into an emotional odyssey. His voice, imbued with authenticity and depth, transcended mere notes and rhythms to touch the soul. With impeccable diction and clarity, he elevated the beauty of poetic lyrics, making every word resonate powerfully with listeners.

For six decades, his songs have touched countless lives, offering solace, joy, and reflection. It’s impossible to single out a "best song" from his vast discography. Yet, one truth stands clear: there is scarcely a Malayali who has not been moved by his soulful renditions.
