Superboys of Malegaon

Reema Kagti's Superboys of Malegaon will get a theatrical release in India, the US, the UK, the UAE, Australia and New Zealand on February 28. Amazon's Prime Video has secured the streaming rights and will release it digitally after the end of its theatrical run.

Penned by Varun Grover (Masaan, All India Rank), the film, based on real events that happened in the small town of Malegaon in Maharashtra, features Adarsh Gourav, Shashank Arora, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Anuj Singh Duhan.

An amateur filmmaker named Nasir Shaikh, hailing from Malegaon, played by Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger, Guns & Gulaabs), is the subject of the film backed by Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Films.

It is inspired by Faiza Ahmad Khan's well-received 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon, which was also endorsed by Anurag Kashyap.

As per the official synopsis, Superboys of Malegaon tells the tale of the "residents of the town look to Bollywood cinema for a much-needed escape from daily drudgery. Nasir gets inspired to make a film for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon. He bands together his ragtag group of friends to bring his vision to life, thereby bringing a fresh lease of life into the town. The film is a poignant yet uplifting take on both filmmaking and friendship - and what happens when those two worlds collide."

The film had its world premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), following which it was selected for screening at the 68th BFI London Film Festival and in competition at the fourth edition of the Red Sea Film Festival.

Reema Kagti made her directorial debut with Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, which she followed up with the Aamir Khan-starring mystery Talaash: The Answer Lies Within. Kagti also co-created the series Dahaad, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Vijay Varma, Sohum Shah and Gulash Devaiah.
