Ahead of the release of Deva on Friday, its actor Shahid Kapoor has been engaged in promotional rounds. During one of the interactions, the comparison between Deva and some of his previous films featuring aggressive characters was brought up, such as Kabir Singh or Udta Punjab.
In a chat with PTI, he clarified that his titular character in Deva has no resemblance, despite both being "aggressive".
Interestingly, the interaction also brought up a connection between Deva and the 1975 Amitabh Bachchan classic Deewar and his celebrated character Vijay.
Directed by Malayalam director Rosshan Andrrews, making his directorial debut in Hindi, Deva has Shahid playing a rebellious police officer named Dev Ambre who is out to seek revenge after a fellow officer is murdered by a terrorist. His investigation intensifies when Dev discovers that there are secrets that lie hidden within his own organisation, exposing deceit. The other principal cast members are Pooja Hegde, Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, and Girish Kulkarni.
The parallels between Deva and Deewar arose after one of the posters showed Shahid posing, with a cigarette in his mouth, in front of a mural of Deewar.
Shahid teased the connection by responding that the question should be directed at Rosshan instead because "he was the one who chose that (visual)" and that there is a relevance of the same in Deva.
Deewaar, which turned 50 this year on January 24, is regarded as one of the finest Hindi films of all time. Directed by Yash Chopra, the action drama was penned by Salim-Javed.
