Two months after its theatrical release, Asif Ali-starrer Rekhachithram will debut on the OTT platform this week. In February, streaming platform SonyLiv and Ali announced in a shared collaborative post that the crime-thriller would be available for viewing from March 7.
Alongside Ali, the film, helmed by Jofin T. Chacko, features Anaswara Rajan, Mammootty, Manoj K. Jayan, Indrans, and Jagadish. Rekhachithram follows the story of recently reinstated CI Vivek Gopinath, who is tasked with solving a suicide case. Upon investigation, startling revelations uncover a much deeper conspiracy stretching over several decades.
The film earned rave reviews from critics, Sajin Shrijith from THE WEEK stating, “Rekhachithram appeals to the hardcore film lovers in all of us, and, in doing so, gets you to admire the inventiveness with which director Jofin T. Chacko weaves together all the pieces of the puzzle into a simple, coherent investigation story. It gets you strongly invested in the victim's story because, after all, you're looking at the story of someone who is a cinephile just like you.”
Bankrolled by Venu Kunnappilly's Kavya Film Company and Anto Joseph’s Ann Mega Media, Rekhachithram was a box office success, grossing Rs 55 crore against a Rs 8.5 crore budget.
The box office collections for Malayalam films in theatres have been staggeringly low this year, considering the immense success the industry had in 2024. Chacko’s Rekhachithram stands out as the only successful film, minting more than the production costs. Vaashi producer G. Suresh Kumar called for a strike to begin on June 1, citing excessive double taxation, and high salaries for actors, technicians and directors, which he claims caused massive losses in the Malayalam film industry.
