The Avengers are back! Sort of. Marvel Studios posted across their social media platforms and on YouTube a cryptic livestream titled “ANNOUNCEMENT” on Wednesday night, featuring an empty studio. As the door opened a director’s chair was placed, the name “Chris Hemsworth” on the back. From then, between the 12th and 13th minute, footsteps were heard as the chair was positioned and someone approached the camera, revealing a new cast member for the film. As the camera panned, the theme song of the featured actor’s character played in the background, giving the viewers a few second to guess who might be next.
Twenty-seven names were revealed for Avengers: Doomsday, clubbing many veteran MCU actors as well as actors from the upcoming Fantastic Four film and X-Men, previously owned by Fox.
As the camera panned (which also featured a tiny chair with Paul Rudd’s name on the back, fitting for Ant-Man) right before the final name was revealed, the camera’s focus stayed on Pedro Pascal, who plays Richard Reed in The Fantastic Four, as the rendition of Alan Silvestri’s Avengers theme played. A blurred figure walked through the studio and as the camera panned, sat on a chair with the name “Robert Downey Jr.” plastered on the back. Downey Jr. turns to the camera, giving a “shhh” to the viewers.

The nearly five-and-a-half-hour live stream ended with the green Avengers: Doomsday title card and a note reading: Now in production. Take a look at the official cast of the film:

Many characters who were rumoured to be in the film were notably missing, like Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda/Scarlett Witch, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Steven Stranger/Doctor Strange. But fret not, as it is customary for Marvel to throw in a few cameos in the film to spice up the hype.
