Payal Kapadia made waves in 2024. Her film, All We Imagine as Light, a narrative about two Malayali nurses in Mumbai, earned global recognition accompanied with several accolades. Her most notable achievement came when the film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, the same award that skyrocketed the film into international acclaim.

Now, after a year of glory, Kapadia will venture into two new projects, though they do seem to share a bond with All We Imagine as Light. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I have two new films in mind. Together with All We Imagine as Light, they will form like a triptych. Not a trilogy, because that would imply that they are a connected story. They will be different pieces, all set in Mumbai.”

While she declined to share what her next two directorials would entail, Kapadia revealed that she will stay on the familiar path as All We Imagine as Light story of women in the bustling city of Mumbai.

Explaining her creative vision, Kapadia said, “I’m always interested in Mumbai being a very accepting space for people from all over our country to come to live and work — especially from a woman’s point of view because it’s not always easy for a woman to live alone in many parts of our country. There will be a lot of questions asked and she will feel that stigma. But in some cities — like Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai — these things are possible and accepted. So the next movie is again going to be simple stories about women — especially those working women from other parts of the country — and the difficulties and the pleasure of living in cities.”

All We Imagine as Light was nominated for two Golden Globe awards, including Best Director for Kapadia and Best Foreign Language Film, a Critics Choice Award, and a BAFTA, among others. Most recently, the movie bagged the Best Film award at the Asian Film Awards.
