Following backlash from right-wing organisations earlier this week, the makers of L2: Empuraan have decided to release a modified version of the film, scheduled to hit theatres next week. According to Manorama News, the edits of the film are underway and expected to be completed by Monday. It will then be submitted to the censor board for further review and clearance.

L2: Empuraan hit theatres on Thursday, its release accompanied by mixed reviews and complaints from the right-wing ideology. Sangh Parivar activists had accused the film of promoting anti-Hindu ideology, referencing the 2002 post-Godhra riots depicted in the film.
In a conversation with Manorama Online, producer Gokulam Gopalan disclosed that he approached director Prithviraj Sukumaran to make the necessary cuts to the film, and acknowledged that it would be an expensive move. "If any scenes or dialogues in Empuraan have hurt anyone, I have told director Prithviraj to make changes. "Making modifications in theatres will be expensive. With the film running in 4,000 cinemas, I estimate that at least Rs 40 lakh would be required for these changes," he said.
Around 17 cuts are said to be made in the film. Before its release, it was revealed that the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had suggested two to three cuts in the film, reducing the overall runtime by ten seconds.
