Helmed by Mick Jackson, The Bodyguard follows Rachel Marron, played by Whitney Houston, an actress-musician, whose constant annoyance by a stalker leads her manager to higher former Secret Service bodyguard Frank Farmer, Kevin Costner. Rachel and Frank’s relationship crosses professional boundaries as they both develop feelings for each other. The film’s ending is bittersweet with Rachel performing a cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You – which, off-screen, translated into one of Houston’s most popular vocal performances, topping charts worldwide, and remains a timeless musical number.
Gary Kemp, Bill Cobbs, Ralph Waite, Tomas Arana, and Michele Lamar Richards were also featured in the film. The Bodyguard also marked Houston’s film debut.
The original flick was penned by Lawrence Kasdan, best known for his work on the Star Wars franchise, while Alan Silvestri, the musical maestro who created the Avengers theme, as well as Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and The Polar Express among others, composed the score for The Bodyguard.
