Health Ministry appoints new DCGI with temporary charge

Dr PBN Prasad will hold the charge till February 28

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appointed Dr P.B.N. Prasad as the new Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). Succeeding Dr V.G. Somani, whose tenure gets over on Saturday, Dr Prasad will be holding the charge till February 28, as per a notification released by the ministry on Wednesday.

"It has been decided with the approval of the Competent Authority, that Dr PBN Prasad, JDC (I) shall hold the charge of the post of Drug Controller of (India) under FR 49 (v) w.e.f. 16.02.2023 till 28.02.2023 (date of his superannuation), or until further orders, whichever is earlier," read the statement from the ministry.

Currently, Dr Prasad is the Joint Drugs Controller.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended the names of three persons, namely, Dr Rajeev Raghuvanshi, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, Indian Pharmcopoeia Commission (IPC), along with Dr Somani and Dr Prasad. The final name will be announced soon.
