A 16-inch gourd was removed from the rectum of a man in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur, reports said. The team of doctors needed two hours to complete July 21's surgery, reports said. The patient, a farmer by profession, is out of danger and recovering, the doctors said.

However, it remains unknown how the long vegetable entered the man's body. His mental wellness is being analysed by the medical team, local media reports said.

Accroding to reports, the Khajuraho man was suffering from severe abdominal pain and was criticial when brought to the hospital. After examination, it became clear that the gourd that entered the patient's body via the rectum was the cause of his pain. It had caused severe internal bleeding as internal membranes were torn and ruptured, news reports said.

The surgical procedure was led by Dr Nandkishore Jatav. "Around 3.30 am, he first went to the Mission Hospital, where the doctor refused to treat him. Subsequently, he came to the district hospital. He was admitted and operated on, during which the membrane ruptured. With the assistance of two other doctors, a gourd approximately one and a half feet long was removed," Dr Jatav was quoted as telling India Today.
