The special section, dedicated to Health news coverage, on THE WEEK website was inaugurated at the event by Health Minister Narasimha, THE WEEK Chief Associate Editor and Director Riyad Mathew and Chief News Editor Stanley Thomas.

In his address, Vikramarka asked the corporate hospitals to show a “human touch” while treating poor patients from rural areas. He said the Telangana government was offering an insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh for poor patients for availing treatment at corporate hospitals. The deputy CM said the government has plans for setting up medical colleges in all districts of the state and also announced that Hyderabad was allocated Rs 10,000 crore for infrastructure development.

He thanked THE WEEK for organising the Best Hospitals Awards and holding the function in Hyderabad. He expressed his gratitude to all the health care workers who dedicate their lives to the well-being of others, from the doctors and nurses to the administrative staff and technicians, forming the backbone of the healthcare system. He reiterated that health care was not just a service, but also a right, a necessity and a reflection of the values that we hold as a society. “Hospitals are at the heart of this system. They are places where lives are saved, where hope is restored,” he said.

Narasimha said a common man coming to the hospital should be treated on par with the rich patients. He elaborated on the Telangana government’s plans for the health sector, including setting up of NCD (non-communicable disease) clinics across the state. He said there should be NCD clinics at every 10-15km distance offering diagnostic services for cancer, cardiac issues, hypertension and diabetes. He also spoke about the need to serve rural and tribal areas. The government has plans for setting up four cancer research centres in Telangana and also around 80 trauma care centres along the highways.
