At THE WEEK Best Hospitals Awards ceremony in Telangana, veteran theatre personality and Padma Shri awardee Mohammad Ali Baig did a touching theatrical representation of the rewards and sacrifices of a doctor’s life.
Doctors often have to give up spending time with their partners, miss annual day ceremonies of their children at school, and are not able to be with their ailing parents, because they are taking care of someone else’s ailing parent, he said.

The trust that a doctor gains, said Baig, has nothing to do with their qualification, but rather the time they spend with their patients and the empathy they show.
Named ‘Behind the White Coat’, Baig spoke about patients often forgetting that a doctor is also a human—a father, husband, mother or daughter. Doctors, too, are often vulnerable, with their own joys and sorrows. Despite this, when they wear the white coat, they forget their troubles and dedicate themselves fully to their calling.
The play showed the world through a doctor’s perspective; it was a poignant insight into the lives of those who hold our lives in their hands.
