HMPV outbreak in China: Should India be worried? Experts weigh in

Directorate General of Health Services and Union Health Ministry's National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is monitoring the situation

Amid reports human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, an Indian health agency on Friday urged the people to remain calm. 

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) official Dr Atul Goyal suggested taking general precautions against all respiratory infections. 

"There is nothing to be alarmed about the present situation," Dr Goyal told reporters.

The Union Health Ministry's National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said that it is closely monitoring the respiratory cases and seasonal influenza in India amid reports of a spike in HMPV cases outbreak in China.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely, validate the information, and update accordingly," officials stated.

Meanwhile, Goyal added that HMPV is a normal respiratory problem that causes the common cold. "We have analysed data on the respiratory outbreaks within the country. There is no substantial increase in December 2024 data and no cases which have been reported in large numbers from any of our institutions," he said.

Goyal urged the public to take necessary precautions just like in any other respiratory infection.

How to prevent the infection? 

1. Wash hands with soap and use sanitizers in public places

2. Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands

3. Maintain distance from infected people and be vigilant around those with respiratory infections

4. Ensure to cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing

5. Avoid sharing utensils and other materials with those infected

6. Seek medical help if any respiratory infection symptoms persist
