India and Canada have signed as many as six pacts, including one on energy cooperation during the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Later, at a joint press conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it is important that India and Canada work together to fight terrorism.

He further said those who challenge our sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be tolerated. There should no place for those who misuse religion for political goals, he added.

Trudeau said India and Canada shared similar democratic and cultural principles.

PM Modi and his Canadian counterpart held talks on a wide range of topics, including terrorism and strengthening ties in defence and education.

Earlier on Friday, Trudeau was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan where Modi greeted him with a hug, putting to rest speculations about the government cold-shouldering the visiting dignitary ever since his arrival in India on Saturday on an eight-day visit, according to IANS.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also called on the visiting dignitary during the course of which the two leaders "discussed ways to strengthen and deepen our partnership.”

The visit by Trudeau, who assumed office in November 2015, comes after Modi's visit to Canada in April earlier that year.

Since arriving in India, Trudeau, his wife and three children have visited Agra, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Amritsar.
