Even as the brutal murder of a youth in Kottayam district of Kerala has sparked off widespread protests and outrage in the state, the victim's fiancee said that her parents were aware of the conspiracy.

Kevin P. Joseph (23), belonged to a family of converted Christians, was found dead a day after he was abducted by a gang of men over his relationship with Neenu Chacko, 20, belonged to the family of an inter-religious married couple.

“My parents were not happy with the financial status of Kevin. I left home after my relatives came to know about my relationship,” Neenu told Manorama News. Neenu belongs to a wealthy family in Kollam district while Kevin, hailing from Kumaranallore in Kottayam, was not affluent.

“I will not return even if my parents call me back,” she said.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the murder, presumably a case of honour killing. Those arrested were identified as Ishan, Niyaz, and Riyaz. Niyas is a local DYFI leader.

Neenu's brother Sanu Chacko is the main accused in the case. Sanu, along with his parents, is still absconding.

“Even though we are not legally married, I am Kevin chettan's wife. I will live in his house, looking after his parents and sister,” Neenu said.

Kerala Human Rights Commission said it was suspected to be a case of honour killing and ordered the state police chief to submit a report in three weeks if there was any negligence from the side of the police in investigating the case.

Meanwhile, police said Sub-Inspector M.S. Shibu and Grade ASI Sunnymon of the Gandhinagar police station were suspended on Monday by Ernakulam Range IG Vijay Sahkare for laxity.
