In a very interesting case of policing, perfect coordination between two police stations has led to the rescue of a four-month-old baby boy who had been kidnapped and the arrest of a woman baby snatcher in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The dramatis personae involved in this case are all-women police teams from two neighbouring police stations, an informer, the accused and a four-month-old baby who had to be carefully looked after, fed and bathed till he was reunited with the mother in Pune.

The jurisdiction and boundaries of police stations are among the most basic reasons why crimes take time to get solved. Police teams often argue among themselves over petty issues like whether a crime has taken place within the jurisdiction of one particular police station or another. In this case, however, the police worked with perfect coordination.

On the day of Bakrid, a team of women police from Amboli police station was busy with its regular bandobast duty when a woman named Varsha Pawar approached them. She told them that she knew a woman who had stolen a baby. Armed with the information, the women police team from Amboli rushed to nab the baby snatcher, a woman named Manisha Kale.

Soon, the police team from Amboli detained Kale along with the baby she had stolen. It was after detaining Kale, that the police team from Amboli realised that they had carried out the action in the jurisdiction of Oshiwara police station. The police team from Amboli decided to go by the rules and handed over the accused and the baby to a women police team from Oshiwara police station.

After taking over the case from the Amboli police team, police sub-inspector Sharmila Patil decided to question Kale, who still maintained that the baby was hers. Kale's defence later crumbled, and she finally admitted that she was from Pune and the baby had been stolen from Pune railway station on August 17.

Patil and her team then got in touch with Pune railway police and informed them about the case. Pune railway police confirmed from their crime diary that a case of baby snatching had been registered with them. The Pune police then contacted the woman who had registered the complaint and travelled with her to Mumbai.

In the meantime, the Oshiwara police team led by Patil, was busy feeding and bathing the baby.

The team of Pune police reached Mumbai on Wednesday evening and finally the mother was reunited with her baby.
