Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should give a hearing to the complaints of women journalists who have made allegations of sexual harassment against Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar.
Maliwal was speaking at an event organised by the Indian Women's Press Corps in New Delhi on Thursday.
Extending her support to the women who dared to speak up, she appealed them to contact the DCW.
Maliwal said often she took up issues suo motu, but in the case of #MeToo campaign, she wants to support the women on their terms. She, however, added that she would even consider taking up the matter against Akbar herself, if the women didn't approach the DCW as the stories that were coming out were of such grave nature.
She further said she, too, feels that Akbar should step down.
