Romania embassy opens its consulate office in Chennai

It coincided with the National Day of Romania

The honorary consulate general of Romania in Chennai was inaugurated today at Nungambakkam, Chennai by Radu Octavian Dobre, the ambassador of Romania to India and Radu Safta, the director general for the department of global affairs, Romania. Vijay Mehta is the new consul general of Romania for Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

A grand reception was held at a 5-star hotel in the city to mark the occasion which also coincided with the National Day of Romania and marked 70 years of its diplomatic relations with India. Rajya Sabha MP Vijila Sathyananth of the AIADMK party was the chief guest. A large number of diplomats and consul generals in Chennai along with the heads and members of leading chambers joined in the celebration.

Ganapathy, president of Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Ramamoorthy, president, Madras Chamber of Commerce, addressed the gathering asking their members to seize the excellent opportunities being offered by Romania in the field of IT, pharma, software development and tourism. Romania has an edge in-terms of its locational advantage and can act as a gateway to Europe, CIS countries and Middle East.

The Ambassador of Romania invited the guests to explore the potential possibilities for tourism, industry and trade between India and Romania. He also reiterated the willingness of Romania to extend logistical support for bilateral growth.

Safta expressed his interest in developing stronger ties and relationship between the two countries. Mehta assured everyone of his full cooperation and guidance. He especially invited the South Indian film industry to consider Romania—with its beautiful landscape and cost effectiveness—as a location as compared to other European destinations.

Sathyananth shared her views and experiences of her recent visit to Romania in September 2018 with the Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu and other Indian delegates.
