Five killed as fire breaks out at Mumbai hospital; rescue ops under way

Five people were killed and several others suffered injuries after a fire broke out in the Employee State Insurance (ESCI) hospital in Mumbai on Monday.

According to media reports, the fire broke out on the fourth floor of the hospital which is located at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) premises in Andheri East. Rescue operations are under way with seven fire engines and five water tankers pressed into service. A fireman reportedly suffered burn injuries during the rescue operations.

"Almost all patients have been rescued. Operations are still on and the fire brigade is checking whether anyone is still trapped inside," Reuters quoted a police official as saying. As many as 108 people were rescued and several patients were shifted to nearby hospitals.
