The Congress marked its 134th foundation day on Friday with a series of social media message extolling the party's legacy during the independence struggle. The Congress was founded on December 28, 1885.

Party chief Rahul Gandhi hoisted the national flag at the Congress headquarters in Delhi on Friday in the presence of senior leaders including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, A.K. Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

In a series of posts on Twitter, the Congress sought to stress its 'inclusive, liberal' stance to distinguish itself from the BJP, which it accuses of being majoritarian. One tweet noted, “For the Congress party, love is always the answer. We will continue to fight the propagators of hate with peace, unity & love.”

The first tweet of the day on the Foundation Day celebrations stated, “Over the last 134 years of Congress history, we have stood for justice, equality, non-violence, unity, freedom and, above all, dialogue. For all the years to come, we will continue to uphold these values and stand with the people of our country.”

The Congress also posted quotes from past leaders such as former prime minister Indira Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and poetess Sarojini Naidu about its legacy in the freedom struggle.
