Over a week after tension spiked on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistan Army resorted to the use of artillery guns to shell Nowshera and Sunderbani in Rajouri district on Wednesday.

Lt Colonel Devender Anand of the Indian Army told THE WEEK that Pakistan had used artillery. Smaller calibre weapons have typically been used in ceasefire violations.

The Pakistan Army had targeted several posts and village areas in Rajouri and Poonch districts since Tuesday night. Army officials told PTI that the Indian side had retaliated effectively and there were no reports of casualties on the Indian side. On Tuesday night, a soldier had been injured in firing in Nowshera, which lasted for nearly three hours.

Four civilians, including three members of a family, were killed and several others injured in over 60 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control in Rajouri and Poonch last week.
