Triple Talaq bill, which criminalises instant divorce by Muslim men and seeks jail term for the guilty, is likely to be taken up by the Lok Sabha for consideration and passage on Thursday, official sources said on Wednesday.
The ruling BJP has issued a whip to its MPs, asking them to ensure their presence in the House. Several opposition parties have bitterly opposed it but the government has asserted that the bill is a step towards gender equality and justice.
Some of the BJP's allies too have also expressed their reservation about the bill. It can easily pass the test of Lok Sabha with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) having a majority. However, it will face stiff opposition in the Rajya Sabha where opposition parties have more numerical strength.
This is the first draft legislation tabled by the Narendra Modi government in this first session.
