Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan courted controversy with remarks on BJP MP Rama Devi, who was officiaiting the Lok Sabha proceedings, which were roundly criticised for being "sexist". "Aap mujhe itni acchi lagti hain ki mera mann karta hai ki aap ki aankhon mein aankhein dale rahoon [You look so good today that I just want to stare into your eyes and speak]," he told Devi, ANI reported.

When MP Devi objected, Khan said that he meant no disrespect and that he viewed Devi as his sister. Khan was asked to apologise; refusing to do so, he walked out of Lok Sabha. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav defended Khan, saying that he meant no disrespect and that the BJP were the most unruly party in the House.

In April, Khan, the national general secretary of Samajwadi Party, landed in a soup on Sunday after making objectionable comments against Jaya Prada, who was earlier with Samajwadi Party and recently joined the BJP. She was then contesting from Rampur constituency of Uttar Pradesh. “I brought her [Jaya Prada] to Rampur. You are a witness that I did not allow anyone to touch her body. It took you 17 years to identify her real face but I got to know in 17 days that she wears khaki underwear,” he said.

Khan’s ‘sexist’ statement that did not name Jaya Prada, but was clearly intended at her, came at a public meeting in Shahabad of Rampur. On Monday, a FIR was lodged against him for the comments and the National Commission for Women has also sought an explanation from the leader.

On Tuesday, both the Houses of the Uttar Pradesh legislature witnessed unruly scenes as opposition Samajwadi Party charged the state government with attempts to frame its leader Azam Khan in land grabbing cases in Rampur.

SP members trooped into the well of the legislative assembly and raised anti-government slogans, following which the House was adjourned for the day.

Similar scenes were witnessed in the legislative council where SP members walked out of the House during the Zero Hour, and charged the Adityanath government with attempts to frame its leader Azam Khan in the cases.
