The Indian Army camp at Pallavaram in south Chennai was in for a shock during the wee hours of Tuesday as a rifleman shot dead a colleague and killed himself with the same gun. Personal animosity and an altercation over the rifleman reporting late for duty had led to the incident, police sources said.

The incident took place around 3am on Tuesday. Havildar Praveen Kumar and rifleman Jaikusheer had reportedly entered into a heated argument on Monday night, before the former could get back to his room.

Around 3am, Jaikusheer, according to police sources, entered the bedroom of havildar Praveen Kumar and shot him dead. Immediately, Jaikusheer killed himself with the same gun.

Both the bodies were sent to the nearby government hospital. The police are investigating whether the altercation between the two Army personnel was the reason for the shooting or if there were any other reasons. Investigations are continuing.
