In a major setback for Bharath Dharma Jana Sena leader Thushar Vellappally, who is facing charges in a Rs 19 crore cheque default case in the UAE, an Ajman court on Wednesday rejected his plea seeking permission to return to Kerala.
Thushar, son of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam leader Vellappally Natesan, was arrested at a hotel in Ajman on August 20 and released on bail two days later.
Thushar had requested the court to allow him to leave the country and said that he was ready to submit the passport of a UAE citizen in the court. However, the court raised doubts over whether another person could take up the financial liabilities of Thushar.

Thushar had issued a cheque of Dh10 million (around Rs 19 crore) years ago to a construction firm that had bounced.
The complaint was registered by a subcontractor from Thrissur, Kerala, who worked for Thushar-owned Boeing Construction Company LLC that is now defunct.
Expressing concern about the well being and health of Thushar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and sought his intervention in the matter.
Tushar's BDJS is an ally of the NDA in Kerala and he had unsuccessfully contested as the NDA candidate against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 general elections from Wayanad.
