Shireen Mody, a Goa-based artist, was found dead at her residence in Arpora Vegas Vaddo on Sunday, with the body of her gardener found a short distance away from the house.
A preliminary police probe found that Mody, 65, was hit on the head with a blunt object and died of her injuries. Police suspect that Mody and her gardener had a violent scuffle, resulting in injuries that killed both of them.
Indian Express reported an eye-witness's statement that the gardener had asked Mody to meet him behind the house, before reportedly attacking her with an iron rod. He was seen running from the home before collapsing 50 metres from it.
An inspector from the Anjuna police station, Navlesh Dessa, told reporters that the two bodies had been sent for a post-mortrem.

Mody had lived in Goa for over three decades, and was known for her nature-inspired art. According to her website, shireenmody.com, her works are "generally large-format acrylic-on-canvas depictions of Goa's life and landscape". In 2016, she painted a series on the coconut palm tree.
She was married to a German architect and is succeeded by her daughter, Saffron Wiehl, with whom she started Studio Arpora.
