Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury's strange tweet on Chidambaram sparks confusion

Chowdhury's tweet was halfway between a legal point and a bad case of translation

After former union minister P. Chidambaram was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the Congress party's MP from Berhampore, Adhir Chowdhury, stumped netizens with a bizarre tweet seemingly hailing the move.

"Enlargement of @PChidambaram_IN ji has eloquently proved that at the end of the day truth prevails upon, he is iŕresistible."

The cryptic tweet, which seems to be an outcome of either autocomplete or Google translation gone wrong, had many trying to guess what the MP was trying to say.

Some blamed Google, as Adhir Chowdhury usually tweets in Bengali, leading to the suggestion that he tried to use Google Translate to make his point in English.

Others tried to take the tweet at face value.

One user pointed out that, as per the legal definition of 'to enlarge', the minister had actually made a technically accurate point. According to thefreedictionary.com's legal section, 'To Enlarge' means, "To extend; as, to enlarge a rule to plead, is to extend the time during which a defendant may plead. To enlarge, means also to set at liberty; as, the prisoner was enlarged on giving bail."

Some pointed out that Chidambaram's lawyer had said earlier that the former union minister had lost four kgs while in jail, making any enlargement of the minister out of the question.

Many tagged Congress MP Shashi Tharoor—also known for his sometimes indecipherable tweets—asking him to translate. Tharoor has not yet replied to the tags.

Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI on August 21 in the corruption case which was registered on May 15, 2017 alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister.

He is presently in the custody of ED which has registered a separate money laundering case related to INX Media.
