Maharashtra elections: BJP-Shiv Sena on course to form government

Exit polls have predicted a comfortable win for the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance

With trends in 283 of 288 Assembly seats available, the BJP leading in 99, Shiv Sena in 61, Congress in 41, NCP in 49, and independents in 15 seats. The Sharad Pawar-led party appeared to have fared better than its parent party and was seen performing well in its stronghold of Western Maharashtra.

The ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance on Thursday looked on course to retaining power in Maharashtra. BJP candidate Udayanraje Bhosale is trailing behind NCP nominee Shriniwas Patil by 10,000 votes in Satara Lok Sabha seat bypoll after the first round of counting.

Shiv Sena's Aaditya Thackeray has established a comfortable lead in Worli assembly constituency where he is making his electoral debut. The 29-year-old is pitted against NCP's Suresh Mane. Former deputy chief Minister Ajit Pawar has established a comfortable lead over his BJP rival Gopichand Padalkar in Baramati.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde was leading over his rival and BJP minister Pankaja Munde by 9540 votes in Parli. Counting of votes for all the 288 Assembly segments began at 8am on Thursday at 269 locations in the state, an official said.

Among the turncoats, former NCP minister and now BJP candidate from Airoli in Navi Mumbai, Ganesh Naik is leading with 8,085 votes and Vaibhav Pichad of BJP is trailing behind NCP's Kiran Lahamate by 10,671 votes in Akole segment in Ahmednagar district. He is the son of former NCP minister Madhukarrao Pichad.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is leading by 5,103 votes from Nagpur South West assembly seat against Congress candidate and former BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh. Former chief ministers Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan are leading in Bhokar in Nanded district and Karad in Satara district, respectively.

Around 25,000 personnel are deployed on counting duty, an election official said, adding police have also made adequate arrangements to ensure a smooth counting process. The highest turnout, of 83.93 per cent, was reported in the Karveer assembly seat in Kolhapur, while the lowest was in south Mumbai's upmarket Colaba area at 40.11 per cent.
