Over the past week, the Congress, like most opposition parties, has been vocal about the sky-rocketing prices of onions across the country. If modes of protest like making garlands and crowns with onions have been common, in Nainital, Congress activists decided to set up affordable onion stalls, selling the staple at Rs 30 per kg on Friday.

But the initiative was all but overshadowed when a man created a ruckus near the stalls and ended up biting off the tip of the left index finger of Congress district general secretary Nandan Mehra.

The Congress members were selling onions priced at Rs 30 per kg at the Buddha Park when Manish Bisht arrived there, shouting slogans and abuse at the party workers. A Congress leader told The Times of India Manish slapped a lady activist. Mehra claimed Manish Bisht was a BJP activist. Mehra alleged Manish was attempting to disrupt the Congress protest.

Mehra was bitten when he attempted to pacify Manish.

The Hindustan Times reported that a video clip of the incident showed Congress workers pushing Manish.

The local police arrested Manish Bisht and said they suspect he may have been drunk or under influence of drugs.

BJP Nainital district president Pradeep Bisht said Manish Bisht had no relationship with his party and was mentally unstable.
