Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday asserted that the varsity will not tolerate police presence on campus and demanded a high-level inquiry into the crackdown on university students.

"Police entered the campus without permission. We will not tolerate police presence on campus. They scared our students with police brutality. There has been huge damage to university property," Akhtar said at a press conference in Delhi.

"We will file FIR on damage of property and police action on students; we want high-level inquiry. I will present facts to the HRD Minister," she added.

Akhtar said the university should not be targeted and its image should not be maligned.

Akhtar denied rumours that any student has been killed in Sunday's incident, but added 200 people were injured in the violence.

"There has been a strong rumour that two students died. We deny this totally; none of our students died. About 200 people were injured of which many were our students," she said.

Home ministry in touch with cops

The Union home ministry is in regular touch with the Delhi Police following violent protests that rocked Jamia Millia Islamia and its adjoining areas but is yet to seek a report on it, officials said on Monday.

Officials said that the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act should be held peacefully and people must abide by the laws.

"We are in constant touch with the Delhi Police and monitoring the situation. However, so far, no report has been sought on Sunday's incidents," a home ministry official said.

The university had turned into a battlefield on Sunday as police entered the campus and also used force, following protests against the act.

A group of Jamia students stood shirtless in the bone-chilling cold outside the university gates on Monday and formed a human chain to protest the police action against their colleagues a day earlier.
