Two days after an armed mob walked into Jawaharlal Nehru University and assaulted students and teachers, the institution's vice-chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday called for making a "new beginning" and putting "the past behind".

Addressing mediapersons, Kumar informed that the registration process for the new semesters had been restarted. On Monday, some JNU officials had blamed the tension at JNU on students who had opposed the registration process. Kumar claimed that some of the students who had opposed the registration process had damaged the registration room and even attacked him in December.

Kumar described the violence on Sunday as being "unfortunate". "Our campus is known for debates and discussions to resolve any issues. Violence is not a solution. We will find every opportunity to make sure that normalcy returns to the university," he declared.

Kumar claimed the hearts of the JNU administration went out to all the injured students. He said he wanted to tell students that the JNU campus was secure.

Kumar has been subjected to heavy criticism following the violence for his inability to address the continued protests against the proposed fee hike at JNU. Both the JNU Students Union and a teachers union have been demanding that he quit or be replaced.
