Even as a section of students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University continues their protests over the January 5 violence on the campus, veteran BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi on Thursday urged the Centre to sack Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar.

Noting that the Human Resource Development ministry had advised twice the vice-chancellor to take steps to resolve the issue, Joshi said, “It is shocking that the VC is adamant for not implementing the government proposal.”

“This attitude is deplorable and in my opinion such a VC should not be allowed to continue on this post,” Joshi said in his tweet. Joshi was the in-charge of the HRD ministry in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1998 to 2004

The HRD ministry had on Wednesday "advised" the vice-chancellor to increase communication with students, take the faculty into confidence and facilitate the semester registration process, days after violence ran amok on the university campus.

Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators, including students and members of civil society organisations, hit the streets on Thursday protesting the violence and demanding resignation of the vice-chancellor.

The students who tried to march towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan were stopped by police and later detained.

Earlier, a delegation of the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) and the JNU Teachers' Association met the HRD ministry officials and demanded removal of the vice-chancellor.

On Sunday, a mob of masked young men stormed the JNU campus and targeted students in three hostels, unleashing mayhem with sticks, stones and iron rods, hitting inmates and breaking windows, furniture and personal belongings. They also attacked a women's hostel.

Police had claimed to have got vital clues about the identities of the attackers, but no arrest has been made so far.
