The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) has asked its students in the Powai Campus to refrain from engaging in "anti-national activities".

According to media reports, in a 15-point circular issued to students on Tuesday, the authorities have asked students not to conduct speeches, plays or music which "disturbs the peace of the hostel environment". The circular also prohibited "distribution of posters or leaflets/pamphlets" in the campus without the permission of the dean of student affairs.

"Residents shall not participate in any anti-national, anti-social and or any other undesirable activities," read point 10 of the circular.

The circular, which sought "good manners" from the students, however, did not specify what exactly constitute "anti-national" activities even as it sought strict implementation of the directives from January 28, 2020.

Some of the students and faculty of the campus had oraganised a candlelight march to extend support and solidarity with the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia University who have been at the forefront of the agitation against the amended citizenship act.

According to news agency IANS, an IIT-Bombay spokesperson said these rules are nothing new. "These are not new rules, but were in the statutes," the news agency quoted associate dean (student affairs) as saying.
