The Customs department, on Wednesday, seized 294 grams of gold worth Rs 12.31 lakh from a Singapore national. Acting on a tip-off, the officials intercepted Dewi (40), who arrived at the Chennai airport by Air India, at the exit. During the search, two pouches of gold paste was found concealed in sanitary pads.
In another case, the Customs officials recovered 307 grams of gold worth Rs 12.86 lakh from a man. Ravi (41) from Chennai arrived at the airport from Singapore. When he was intercepted and searched at the exit, nine gold cut bits were recovered from his pocket.
There were four such cases reported on Tuesday.
In one case, 424 grams of gold worth Rs 17.76 lakh was recovered from a person who arrived at the airport from Sri Lanka. Rasikali (32) hailing from Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu was searched, and the gold paste was recovered.
In another incident, Dhiraj Kumar (34) from Bihar arrived at the airport from Thiruvananthapuram. When he was intercepted and searched, 908 grams of gold worth Rs.38 lakhs was found from him. He has been arrested.
In a third case, a person arrived at the airport from Dubai. When his bag was searched, 27 iPhones, 16 Apple's AirPods, two Apple TVs, and two Apple watches were recovered. Besides, electronic goods worth of Rs 24.14 lakh were seized. The person, identified as Baseer Syed (24) of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, was arrested.
In a fourth case, a person bound for Sharjah was intercepted at departure terminal after immigration clearance. During the search, 40,000 Saudi Riyal worth Rs 7.36 lakh was recovered from Azees Kipli (25) of Ramanathapuram.
