A day after the government confirmed the first coronavirus-related death of a 76-year-old man in Karnataka, another death was reported in west Delhi on Friday. The patient was a 68-year-old woman and the mother of a COVID 19-infected patient.
The death was caused due to co-morbidity (diabetes and hypertension), the Union health ministry said, adding she had also tested positive for COVID-19.
“The patient had history of contact with a positive case — her son had a travel history to Switzerland and Italy between February 5 and February 22. Initially, he was asymptomatic, but developed fever and cough after a day and reported to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on March 7. As per protocol, the family was screened and since he and his mother had fever and cough, both were admitted,” the ministry said in a statement.
The woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, and her sample was collected on March 8. Her condition worsened on March 9, when she developed pneumonia and she was shifted to the intensive care unit.
Since March 9, she was having respiratory fluctuations and was provided ventilator support. "However, due to co-morbid conditions, she died on March 13 at the RML Hospital, Delhi as confirmed by the treating physician and Medical Superintendent," the statement said.
“All precautionary measures as per protocol including screening and quarantine of the contacts are already taken up by the ministry of health, Government of Delhi and status is being monitored,” the ministry spokesperson said.
